Helping Ukraine for 10 years

SME SPOLU (meaning WE ARE TOGETHER in Slovak) is a civic association of Ukrainians in Slovakia, which was founded in 2015 in Bratislava. From 2014 to 2015 we worked as volunteers.

Ukraine-Slovakia SOS is a charity fund, which was founded in Ukraine in 2015 to provide humanitarian aid gathered by SME SPOLU in Slovakia.

In September 2014, our volunteers created a Facebook group named UkraineSlovakiaSOS which provides information on current needs as well as support collected and delivered to Ukraine. As a volunteer movement of support to Ukraine it’s been two years since we started to take care of the Ukrainian wounded soldiers who were undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation in Slovakia and Austria. We used to buy medicines and healthcare supplies for the Ukrainian hospitals, collected and shipped clothes, shoes, toys, baby food, hygiene products for the kids of the fallen Ukrainian heroes, children’s homes and internally displaced persons.

Our volunteer activity has resulted in establishment of Charitable Fund “Ukraine – Slovakia SOS” in Ukraine and “SME SPOLU” (English meaning: “We are together”) in Slovakia.

Both organizations are managed by one team. Together we implement the following projects:

  • humanitarian aid to Ukrainian orphans;
  • humanitarian aid to Ukrainian hospitals in the frontline zone – in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak republic;
  • assistance in clarifying information about the rights of refugees and temporarily displaced persons: European practices and their implementation – in cooperation with SlovakAid;
  • Ukrainian and Slovak House – in cooperation with the Magistrate of the City of Bratislava and the District of Bratislava-Nové Mesto;
  • creation of Ukrainian community centers for supporting education, integration and protection of Ukrainians who received temporary protection in Slovakia – in cooperation with UNICEF;
  • social integration of Ukrainians who received temporary protection in Slovakia – in cooperation with The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR);
  • prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse – in cooperation with ICVA.

In addition to the projects listed above, by direct collection of charitable donations we assist emergency care institutions in war zones. In particular, Ukrainian medical workers in the frontline territories were handed over an ambulance car, a mobile laboratory, a mobile X-ray unit, medicine and dressing material. Similarly, we provide targeted support to the wounded and their families.

Our mission

Help for victims of Russian aggression in Ukraine

This year the Slovak council of “Biela vrana” awarded those that were helping Ukraine and its nation to protect itself from Russian aggression and those that were trying to mitigate the impact of the horrors of the war.

Ukraine-Slovakia SOS/SME SPOLU received the award “Biela vrana-2022” for aiding Ukraine together with the president of Slovakia, other Slovak organizations and volunteers.

In February 2022 Ukraine-Slovakia SOS/SME SPOLU launched new initiatives aimed at helping our countrymen both in Ukraine and in Slovakia on a voluntary basis:

  • collection of medical supplies in Slovakia and their transfer to medical institutions in war zones in Ukraine;
  • search for housing for Ukrainians, who arrived in Slovakia because of the war;
  • assistance to Ukrainians at border crossings;
  • coordination of the transportation of Ukrainians from border crossing points to their places of temporary residence;
  • informational support of Ukrainians that have temporarily left their homes (a hotline);
  • creation of a volunteer database.
